One extremely useful tool in Excel is that of Goal Seek. This function allows the user to see what value is required in a particular cell in order to meet a specified goal. A user first selects a cell with a final value in it (the goal), and then selects the cells that feed into the target cell. Goal Seek then determines what value needs to be placed in the variable cell in order to reach a target value.
For example, say you need to sell 50 M&Ms in a particular week. If Monday – Thursday you sold 5 M&Ms each day, goal seek would tell you that you need to sell 30 M&Ms on Friday in order to reach your end-of-week goal. From a business perspective, Goal Seek can predict how many clients you have to service in order to generate your company’s desired revenue; or how many hours and employees it would take to run a full time staff up to a certain payroll limit.
